The Perfect Karaoke Party

Lights, camera, and karaoke! Well, the camera is optional, but the fun is not! We’ve got everything you need to host a rockin’ karaoke event. We have thrown LEGENDARY karaoke parties at our house! Because we are so serious about our karaoke that we turned our media room into a full-fledged karaoke party set up complete with flat black walls and black carpeting.

So what are the basics of what you need for The Perfect Karaoke Party? This can be broken down into several categories:

  • Lighting
  • Staging and Karaoke Equipment
  • Theme Ideas

Lighting

Setting the proper atmosphere is one of the most important details for a successful karaoke party. The first thing to consider is lighting. Poor or boring lighting can ruin a party.

Try to get the room as dim as you can. Then add something like this color-changing rope lighting around the perimeter of the room and throw in some inexpensive dj lighting. I recommend the kind of rope lighting that can change color because it can do double duty of lighting the party and giving some energetic movement to the atmosphere.

You could also get a special light for movement.  We personally have used an older model of this Chauvet Mushroom light to great success in both home parties and professionally hosted private parties for years. This light can be set to move and change color to the sound of the music.  Or you can use presets that keep the party moving. Movement = Energy = Fun!

We also have light trees for our Karaoke room. They sit about 2/3rd back into the room on either side of the seating area. We use these to mount the mushroom light for the general atmosphere as well as a pair of directional lights to direct a little focus light to showcase the singer.

You can also create a nightclub atmosphere in the room by hanging a disco ball from the ceiling or use a table-top one in the corner of a room for a spectacular effect. We have a disco ball called a pin spot.  We put it on a table and during disco songs, we would turn it on and transport everyone back in time.

Cheaper Lighting Alternatives

However, you don’t have to purchase special lighting. You can still get good atmosphere with a simple colored bulb from Walmart or somewhere like that in a lamp.  Consider thought that you will be missing the energetic atmosphere that moving lights can create.

If you are not quite as hardcore as we are and don’t want to purchase light trees, that’s alright, too. Any floor lamp that has a flexible neck will do. Simply, replace the white bulbs with colored ones and you’re set! LED bulbs are best because they won’t make the singer hot, break, or burn anyone if the party gets crazy!

The object here is to get away from plain white lights as much as possible and add a little color. If you can dim the lights in your karaoke room, that can work too, just be sure to add some colored lights.

Staging and Karaoke Equipment

The Stage Area

If you are crafty, you can build a sturdy stage out of wood and cover it with carpet. This will give the singer a focal point and make you the envy of Karaoke enthusiasts everywhere! We have one of these permanently installed in our karaoke room.

Or you can rent a small stage usually at a party rental place usually quite reasonably. Once the lighting is set, you will need the essential party supplies like a karaoke machine, a microphone, and some kind of screen or monitor to read the words.

Whether you use a stage or not, it is important to decide in advance where the singers will perform.

Projecting the Lyrics

A television set works, or you can do what we do and that is hook our karaoke machine up so that it plays through our projector. That way the whole room can see the words and sing along to the songs. It really adds a special touch when everyone can see the words!
